About The Department

TheDepartment of SANSKRIT was one of those Departments of the college which hasbeen there since its very inception. In the initial years, it taughtUndergraduate General Course (B.A. General) and since 2005 Honours Programmewas initiated (B.A. SANSKRIT Honours). Right from the early years, theDepartment helped students achieve academic success through consistentUniversity results and involvement in multidimensional educational pursuit.Khejuri had been an important vantage point for colonial interaction. Not onlydid it witness the establishment of pre-British (Portuguese) and Britishcolonial centres, it also saw the foundation of the first Telegraph Office inSouth Asia. The Department is aware of the importance of Khejuri in Colonialand Asiatic transactions and steers its academic pursuits in engaging areas ofprobing into local history and colonial interactions, environment andliterature as well as various exchanges of culture and language.

Severaleminent educationists of Khejuri has been involved in teaching in theDepartment since its foundation. Late Brihaspati Mondal, Former Headmaster,Ajaya Annada Vidyamandir and an accomplished writer, had been the firstDepartmental Head. Late Sadhan Bhadra, former Headmaster, Khejuri Adarsha Vidyapith,had taught in the Department. Prof. BiswajitAcharya had been Departmental Headfor several years and shaped the developmental phase of the Honours Department.Prof. Jahangir Hossein and Prof. Soumya Bharati also taught in the initialyears. Under the stewardship of Prof. Shibes Panda (who became DepartmentalHead in 2015), the Department went through a new efflorescence, buoyed by thejoining of young faculty members like Prof. Alakesh Panda, Prof. Homagni Shitand Prof. Puja Das. The Department has published Wall Magazine, “Rhapsody”since 2014 and has also held Departmental Freshers’ Programme. In recent years,the Department has formed its own Alumni and has held Departmental Alumni Meet.

Aim and Objectives of the Department

  •  The Departmentaims at being the hub for Higher Educational study and research on “SANSKRIT”.
  • The Departmentaspires to facilitate research and interaction in interdisciplinary Humanitiesinitiatives and projects, focusing on “Sanskrit Literature and Culture”.
  • The Departmentendeavours to help students in achieving academic excellence in order to craftout a future career of academic and professional accomplishment.
  • The Departmentwants to be a centre for the development of Digital Humanities in order to aidinnovative pedagogical and research initiatives.
  • The Departmentaims at disseminating Sanskrit speaking and communication skills through theuse of e-resources, language labs etc.
